The Sound of Bad Habit is producer-rapper Baby Keem’s début project, with 12 songs clocking in nearly 22 minutes. Executive produced by Cardo, Bad Habit, to me, is structured like a punk album, packed with the most punchy and straightforward of sounds and rhymes. This project is controlled chaos and organized confusion, intertwined around heavy bass, sparse percussion and eerie melodies. After one listen, the title of the project makes sense because it becomes extremely addicting, like a bad habit.
When I Get Home
The 4th studio album from Houston singer Solange is, to me, an example of evolution. I consider When I Get Home the confidence, character and self-love Solange spoke about in her last effort, 2016’s A Seat at the Table. With appearances from The-Dream, Playboi Carti, Gucci Mane, and more, this album rattles the trunk and exudes a sense of home for Beyoncé’s little sister. This, along with Travis Scott’s 2018 album ASTROWORLD, is the sonic representation of Houston, Texas.
Released on April 19th, 1994, the debut album from Queens prodigy Nas is considered by many as the best hip-hop album of all time. Breaking the trend of having one producer take care of a rap album, Illmatic was produced by a bunch of New York legends, such as Large Professor, Q-Tip, Pete Rock & DJ Premier. Equipped with the best production, Nas provided a detailed, layered perspective of a young, black, imperfect kid from New York City. If you never been, just listen to this.
The 3rd album by NYC hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest, released in 1993 on Jive Records. Coming off the success of 1992’s The Low End Theory, the album serves as a smooth segue into a more developed, polished sound, while still sticking to the aesthetic Tribe is known for.
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish
The 2018 debut release by Trenton phenom Rwude, released on Dishonor. As my first official placement as album designer (with Kile Childress & Drew “Druwop” Bosompem under Litty Boyz International), it felt good to team up & make great content for a personal friend of mine.
Released in October 2018 through a joint venture with Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records & Kanye West’s GOOD Music, Harlem upstart Sheck Wes’ debut Mudboy is a myriad of firestarters meant for the meanest of moshpits.
The 5th (and unfortunately, last) album from Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller. Released a month before his untimely death, the album hauntingly becomes his best work, where Mac continues his theme of honesty, maturity and musical growth. Rest well Mac.
As the 8th album from Chicago icon Kanye West, ye became the second album to be released from the Wyoming Sessions, where the respective albums from Pusha T, Kids See Ghosts (Kid Cudi & West), Teyana Taylor & Nas stemmed from.
