I'm Nyles Rainey, a 24-year old designer from East Orange, NJ. I developed an interest in art from hip-hop and skate culture. I began as a painter in 10th grade, making monochromatic and abstract pieces. My early influences in that field were Paul Cezanne, Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol & Jean-Michel Basquiat. After I graduated high school, I decided to go into music and divert away from painting. I felt like I could express more in this medium.
In 2012, I started rapping. I developed a love for it and practiced daily. After a year or two, I started work on my album, Reason. I then found a interest in graphic design, typography and art direction. Growing up as a kid with young parents, I was always in the loop with hip-hop music and the covers behind it. I realized that the album cover can explain the sound without even playing the music. The art direction of the product is supremely important in the grand scheme of it all. I ended up working both mediums for the better part of 2 years, releasing my album in July 2017 and launching VERNELL, an album design and art direction brand, in September 2016.
I feel it's just the beginning. The only way is up.
